Frequently Asked Questions

Cashmere is a natural fibre harvested from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, primarily found in the highlands of Inner Mongolia and Nepal. It is prized for being exceptionally soft, lightweight, and warm. Unlike sheep's wool, cashmere does not contain lanolin oil, which is a common trigger for skin irritation and eczema flare-ups in babies and young children. This makes it a naturally hypoallergenic, breathable, and temperature-regulating choice for delicate skin.

Each spring, cashmere goats naturally shed their fine undercoat, which is gently combed by hand rather than shorn. The raw fibre is then sorted, cleaned, and spun into yarn before being knitted or woven into finished garments. Our pieces are handcrafted by trusted makers in Inner Mongolia, using time-honoured techniques that respect both the fibre and the people who work with it. It is a slow, careful process, and that is very much by design.

Look for products made from 100% pure cashmere. Baby-grade cashmere, like the yarn we use, measures around 14 to 15 microns from the first combing, making it finer and softer than standard adult cashmere (15.5 to 16.5 microns). Authentic, high-quality cashmere actually becomes softer with each wash and wear, so if a product loses its softness quickly, it may contain synthetic blends or lower-grade fibre.

Cashmere is a rare fibre. Each cashmere goat produces only a small amount of usable undercoat per year, and baby-grade cashmere (from the first combing) typically costs 20 to 40% more than standard cashmere due to its scarcity and superior fineness. At Heirloom Cashmere, we keep our pricing fair through a lean distribution model with no inflated retail margins. You are paying for the quality of the fibre and the craftsmanship, not layers of middlemen.

We believe so, wholeheartedly. A well-made cashmere piece is not a single-season purchase; it is something designed to be passed down across generations as a true heirloom. Our blankets and garments are seasonless, never discounted, and never "last season." When you invest in quality cashmere, you are choosing a product that grows softer over time, holds its beauty for years, and carries real meaning as a keepsake.

Cashmere is an excellent choice for newborns because it is naturally hypoallergenic, breathable, and free from lanolin, which can irritate sensitive skin. Our cashmere blankets are perfect for supervised cuddles, stroller outings, and nursing. Please note that, in line with safe sleep guidelines, loose blankets of any kind should not be placed in a cot with an unsupervised sleeping infant.

Hand wash your 100% cashmere pieces in cold water using a gentle wool detergent, then lay them flat on a towel to dry. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric, as this can stretch the fibres. For storage, always fold cashmere (never hang it) and keep it in a breathable bag with cedar or lavender to deter moths. A little pilling is completely normal in the first few wears; simply use a cashmere comb to gently remove any pills, and the fabric will smooth out beautifully.

Our knitted cashmere blanket/babywear/scarf can also be machine-washed in a low temperature handwash/wool cycle. Do not use a dryer.

We do not currently offer additional gift wrapping. Our newborn gift boxes are gift-ready. Our baby blanket/scarf comes in a beautiful cotton pouch ready for gifting.

We do not currently offer embroidery service. Our cashmere can be safely embroidered on by a third-party service.
